DOXA SUB 300 Carbon Aqua Lung Limited Edition Watch Review

Jewellery & Watch News

Earlier in the week, DOXA proved once again that even after over 130 years of extraordinary watchmaking tradition, they can still break new ground with their very first high-tech forged carbon watch: the DOXA Sub 300 Carbon Aqua Lung Limited Edition. As well as being engineered from a new and revolutionary material, the limited edition of 300 pieces showcases a COSC certified automatic winding movement and revives a historic partnership between DOXA and the legendary diving brand Aqua Lung.

DOXA have one of the most remarkable histories in all of watchmaking and it is a topic we would happily talk about for hours (see our full DOXA watch collections run-down here as proof), but in short, the brand became legendary for what is now known as the SUB concept, a concept that completely changed the benchmark for professional diving standards. It all started in 1967 when DOXA decided it was time for a truly purpose designed divers watch to be accessible to both professional and amateur divers at an affordable price. The SUB concept was home to the first general public divers watch fitted with a helium release valve and showcased an impressive 300 metre water resistant case and the iconic patented rotating bezel that allowed the diver to calculate and monitor no-decompression dive times based on the official US dive tables.

The new DOXA Sub 300 Carbon Lung Limited Edition retains all the hallmark features of its historic predecessor with a matching 300 metre water resistant case assisted by a pressure resistant titanium chamber and a screw down crown. We are also greeted to the very same patented unidirectional rotating bezel for calculating and monitoring no-decompression dive times, while for a modern touch, the inserts of the diving scale are defined by white Superluminova markings, a white dot at 12H and yellow accents for depth indications in feet for easy legibility in darker depths. Contemporary sapphire crystal glass has also been included to protect the sophisticated black dial.

A few years before the DOXA Sub concept was born, a gentlemen named Jacques-Yves Cousteau co-invented the Aqua Lung underwater breathtaking system. The technology became the first open-circuit self-contained underwater breathtaking apparatus to reach worldwide popularity and success. Having witnessed the creation of the DOXA Sub first hand, Cousteau secured an exclusive distribution agreement for his company US Divers where all DOXA watches sold through US Divers featured the Aqua Lung logo and the distinctive imagery of the dive tank and regulator on the dial. During the development of the first series, a small batch of DOXA SUB 300 models showcased an Aqua Lung logo in black and yellow – subsequently nicknamed “Black Lung”. Only a few of these units from the batch made it to market and since then have are among the most coveted pieces for DOXA collectors around the world. The new DOXA SUB 300 Carbon Aqua Lung Limited Edition honours the original with a revival of the black and yellow logo.

As well as honouring its own heritage, the DOXA SUB 300 Carbon Aqua Lung watch makes history of its own with the first DOXA watch case to be engineered from forged carbon. This high-tech material is renowned for its lightweight characteristics and remarkable durability while its unique construction of carbon fibre gives the watch subtle camouflaged finish. Like the case, the dial of the DOXA SUB 300 Aqua Lung is crafted from carbon and offers a stealthy aesthetic with sporty white and yellow accents. To complete the masculine look, the limited edition is fitted with a black rubber strap and a black PVD treated folding clasp featuring the exclusive DOXA fish symbol.  Housed within the case is an official COSC certified chronometer automatic movement which promises an accuracy of -4 to +6 seconds a day. The ETA 2824-2 calibre provides 28,800vph, hours, minutes, seconds and date function and a power reserve of 42 hours.

Jan Edöcs, CEO of DOXA Watches, comments: “DOXA has been experiencing an unprecedented revival over the past 12 months. The brand's unique history, the quality of our watches and our ability today to innovate and project ourselves into the future while staying true to our DNA are the key ingredients of a strategy that remains faithful to the principle established in 1889 by Georges Ducommun: to design and produce watches of high technical quality that are reliable and affordable. We are very proud of our heritage, and particularly happy to experience a success today, the fruit of passionate work. In presenting the SUB 300 Carbon Aqua Lung US Divers, I am delighted to announce that we have formalized our partnership with Aqua Lung, with whom we share a long history and the same values: innovation, quality and customer service. With this collaboration, we again have a perfect combination of the world of diving with that of technical and reliable watchmaking.”
