Here at C W Sellors, our beautiful handmade jewellery designs are inextricably linked with the Blue John gemstone- a rare mineral that was discovered over 2000 years ago by the Romans. Its distinctive yellow, blue and purple banding that runs throughout the variety of the mineral Calcium Flourite is instantly recognisable and is what makes each of our exquisite Blue John jewellery designs so unique and wonderful. Aside from featuring in some of our most popular bestselling designs, Blue John gemstone has been showcased in stately homes for centuries and is extracted from a very specific location within the beautiful Peak District. Nestled deep in the caves of Hope Valley, Derbyshire - Blue John can be found opposite the Mam Tor mountain and has only ever been discovered in the Treak Cliff and Blue John Cavern located in Castleton.
Interestingly, when the Romans discovered the rare mineral upon searching for lead ore, they began turning and polishing the stone creating ornaments, recognising it for its outstanding beauty. Pieces were even found in the Pompei excavations. During the First World War, lots of large pieces of Blue John were overmined, resulting in a shortage of this rare mineral, especially for larger ornamental designs, newly found passageways were then protected in 1926 but were opened to the public in 1935. Small extracts of Blue John can still be mined and used for exquisite pieces of jewellery as seen in our impressive range of unique designs here at C W Sellors. Done by hand, the extraction of this special gemstone is an intricate process to avoid permanent damage often caused by large machinery to its distinctive colouring and banding. Historically, there have been fourteen recorded distinctive veins of Blue John including the famous 'Millers Vein', 'Treak Cliff Blue Vein', '5 Vein', '12 Vein' and 'Old Tor Vein'. A newly discovered vein has now entered the record books as variant number 15, named the Ridley vein, having been uncovered by Gary Ridley in august 2015
