Georg Jensen is a highly revered name in the luxury jewellery industry. Aside from making exquisite jewellery creations, the Scandinavian manufacturer is also popular for its broad range of homeware designs and watches. Part of its esteemed reputation is based on an interesting backstory and a history based on quality and authenticity. Georg Jensen was one of the first silversmiths to introduce the US to Scandinavian designs. Although beginning as an inspiring sculptor, Jensen found success after creating eye-catching Art Nouveau flatware, so much so that some of the brand’s original pieces from this period are incredibly sought-after today.
A brief history of Georg Jensen
Georg Jensen’s story began when the sculptor rented a small shop in Copenhagen and began exhibiting his silverware designs. Making silver jewellery designs was found to be very profitable for him, especially since each of his creations was entirely unique. Jensen began by experimenting with inexpensive stones in his jewellery designs to give him an idea of which pieces sold well. His earrings, rings, brooches, bracelets and hat pins were marketed towards the middle class of society.
Interestingly, many of Georg Jensen’s innovative silver jewellery designs were inspired by elements of nature. Adamant he would not let the sheer uniqueness and beauty of his designs be overtaken by mass production, Georg Jensen focused on creating designs that looked and felt exclusive. After experiencing success with his jewellery designs, Jensen branched out into a range of homeware products, drawing upon his know-how and a keen eye for detail. To this day, many Georg Jensen homeware products are bold, influential and evoke a sense of fluidity. In 1905, a good friend named John Rhode approached Georg Jensen to ask him for a set of flatware based on one of his designs. From this point onwards, Georg Jensen focused on flatware having aspired to do so for quite some time. Whilst doing this, his jewellery designs were still being met with resounding success.
From the 1920s to the 1930s, Georg Jensen focussed heavily on Art Deco-inspired functionalist designs that were incredibly streamlined and uniform. Epitomising biomorphic designs was a designer named Henning Koppel who collaborated with Georg Jensen to create some of the brand’s most popular designs to date. The movement was characterised by fluid, flowing designs and organic shapes. After Georg Jensen died in 1935, the company continued and is now considered as popular as ever.
The Georg Jensen Moonlight Grapes jewellery collection
The Moonlight Grapes jewellery series by Georg Jensen is inspired by the brand’s original Grape bowl in 1918. The famous Art Nouveau masterpiece is considered an icon today and has formed the foundations of the company’s stylish jewellery collection featuring rings, bracelets and earrings. The collection comprises designs that feature an abstract original grape motif with spherical formations crafted from sterling silver. Playing with asymmetry, the clusters of grape-inspired balls shine beautifully under the light, elevating any style of attire and making ordinary occasions a touch more special.
The various-sized beads feature throughout the range of designs, with necklaces proving to be an incredibly popular choice from the collection. That said, every piece of Moonlight Grapes jewellery by Georg Jensen is designed to complement another, enabling the lucky wearer to stack and layer these creations for an eye-catching finish.
