Yesterday Breitling held their Summit Webcast, an online event which sees them launch their latest luxury watch releases. Alongside a new range of Top Time B01 Classic Cars watches (which we’ve already reviewed here), the Swiss watchmaker revealed another set of a gorgeous dress watches powered by their in-house B01 self-winding movement. In total, we’ve been treated to six new Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watches which beautifully tribute the original Breitling Premier from the 1940’s with retro aesthetics paired with quality and performance worthy of the modern-day wrist.
It was exactly two years ago when Breitling officially revived the Breitling Premier watch as a permanent collection, taking inspiration from the Swiss watch brand’s legendary founders and their proud traditions with the chronograph complication. Alongside a Premier B25 Datora watch and the B15 Duograph, the collection featured the Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph. With its 40mm diameter, refined and colourful bicompax displays and alligator leather straps, these Breitling chronograph watches became instant hits with collectors who appreciated heritage-inspired design with a modern twist. Now tempting the eyes of the very same is the new Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watch collection which offers the same timelessly elegant aesthetic but with a larger 42mm sized case and Breitling best-known movement, the B01 self-winding calibre.
At first glance, the six new Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watches look much like the 40mm variants from two years ago. They offer the same beautifully curved lugs, highly polished surfaces and smooth unadorned bezels. There’s also the same characteristic grooves on the side of the case, a simple knurled crown at 3 o’clock and the two flat, square pushers for manipulating the chronograph complication. Their main difference is how they sit on the wrist, now coming in 2mm wider at 42mm in diameter. They are also a smidge bit thicker too, accommodating the B01 movement, at 13.6mm tall. Five of the Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watches are engineered from classic stainless steel while a single, more opulent model is available in 18 carat red gold.
The new Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watch is available in a choice of five dial colours. The 18 carat red gold model presents a gorgeous silver, almost cream-coloured dial with the distinctive Premier numerals and syringe-shaped hands coloured in rose gold to match the case. There is also a stainless steel Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watch available with this exact display. The other four dial colours include black, blue, copper and green all adorned in silvered hardware for the hands and numerals. All of the dials feature twin registers for the small seconds and 30 minutes totaliser and a date window at 6 o’clock to complete the display’s symmetry. There’s also subtle inflections of red on the chronograph seconds hand and tachymeter lettering as well as Superluminova inserts on the central hour and minute hands.
A huge selling point of the Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watches is the B01 manufacture movement placed at the core. The B01 calibre is arguably one of the brand’s most famous in-house movements, chronometer certified with an accuracy of -4 to +6 seconds a day and equipped with a column-wheel chronograph with vertical clutch and an impressive power reserve of 70 hours. We’re also promised a total of 41 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph. As you’d expect from any movement created by Breitling, the finishing of the B01 self-winding movement is done to an extremely high standard. You can see the movement through the watch’s sapphire crystal glass back including the Côte de Genève striped oscillating rotor which on the 18ct red gold model matches its case in gold.
Each of the Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 watches is available on a choice of two straps. There’s the timeless seven-row link bracelets in stainless steel or 18 carat gold with a butterfly folding clasp or a range of alligator leather straps. The leather bands vary in colour from black to tan brown to a dark brown depending on the model and all close by a folding buckle.
