Breitling Superocean Outerknown Automatic 44 Watch Review

Jewellery & Watch News

For as long as we can remember, Breitling has engineered outstanding diving watches that have become reliable and trustworthy instruments for professional divers around the world. Their Breitling Superocean collection has topped the hierarchy for functionality, resistance and performance since its first release in 1957 and today, Breitling extends their legacy with this Breitling Superocean Outerknown Automatic 44 watch. This remarkable dive watch continues to focus on the challenges faced by underwater explorers while also concentrating on the health of our oceans with a brand new ECONYL yarn NATO strap which has been repurposed from nylon waste.

Released alongside brand ambassador and Surfers Squad member Kelly Slater, the Breitling Superocean Outerknown watch continues to build on the brand’s partnership with the sustainable clothing brand Outerknown. Like Breitling, the fashion company works alongside the NGO Ocean Conservancy charity to raise awareness of the problems with ocean waste while also upholding a belief that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice style for sustainability. Breitling have taken this idea on board with the addition of a special ECONYL yarn NATO strap recycled from nylon waste which has been pulled out of our oceans. One of the materials regenerated to create the strap is fishing nets, one of the ocean’s deadliest killers for marine life. The strap is adorned in a gorgeous khaki green colour detailed with black stripes and the Outerknown logo.

Alongside the release of the Breitling Superocean Outerknown Automatic 44 watch, Breitling have released 18 new NATO straps that come in six different colours and four different sizes, all crafted from ECONYL yarn. These straps are both stylish and ecologically responsible and can be fitted to almost any Breitling watch on the market. Breitling CEO Georges Kern says: “We are happy to be able to build on our excellent partnership with Kelly Slater and Outerknown. The Superocean Outerknown is a fantastic watch, but the enduring story is the innovative strap collection. It marks another important step in our shared focus on sustainability”.

The Breitling Superocean Outerknown watch remains a must have for both serious and amateur divers with its striking 44mm stainless steel case fitted with a ratcheted unidirectional bezel. The bezel comes decorated with a 60 minute scale around the edge, a must-have piece of technology for divers so they can accurately and safely record their oxygen levels while underwater. The bezel, which is decorated in a dark green colour, matches the same military inspired aesthetic as the strap and dial which provides an unmissable finish on the wrist. The dial is also accented by large hour and minute hands coated in Superluminova, a bold yellow pointed seconds hand and a useful date window at 3 o clock.

Each of these functions are powered by the Breitling Calibre 17 automatic movement, a COSC certified calibre created in-house by the Swiss watch manufacturer themselves. The automatic movement also provides a power reserve of approximately 38 hours, 25 jewels and promises a frequency of 28,800vph. Protected by sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, the chronometer movement is kept hidden behind a closed case back which not only assists in the watch’s impressive 1,000 metre water resistance but is decorated with the Outerknown logo to commemorate the partnership.

Whether you are an ocean adventurer ready to test the remarkable functionality of the Breitling Superocean Outerknown watch or you are someone who prefers to stay closer to shore but loves the look of this Breitling watch, you can order own at a retail price of £3,175 here.
