For much of its life, most of us have known Bell & Ross for their aviation and military watches that conform to their unique circle-within-a-square aesthetic. A story that many luxury watch wearers are unfamiliar with, however, is the one surrounding Bell & Ross’ long established relationship with the diving world. Back in 1997, Bell & Ross launched their first divers model, the HYDROMAX which with a quartz movement and revolutionary case filled with oil delivered a formidable water resistant of 11,100 metres. Later down the line in 2002, they introduced the Bell & Ross Diver 300 which unlike the HYDROMAX boasted an automatic winding mechanism. Shortly after that in 2007, they released the BR 02 which became an instantly recognisable design for its retro tonneau-shaped case.
At this point, Bell & Ross’ portfolio was enough to convince fans they could do more than just aviation watches, but none of these divers’ references would manage to secure as much interest as the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver would when it was released at Baselworld 2017. The BR 03-92 Diver was first introduced in steel and stuck closely to the brand’s roots with an iconic square shaped case and round dial at the centre. Since then, we have seen several reiterations of the reference including a range of bronze BR 03-92 Diver watches, a Full-Lum variant and an all-black ceramic piece with a matching black dial. There’s no doubt that the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Divers has proved itself as a permanent fixture in their collections and remains, for many, the brand’s flagship model. For further proof, the collection continues to expand with the addition of their newest release: the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver Military Ceramic watch.
With the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver Military Ceramic, the Swiss watch manufacturer retains the elements that have made the design so successful. The emblematic square-shaped case preserves its 42mm by 42mm profile with a round unidirectional bezel at its centre and 4 functional screws at each corner. The bezel is unidirectional and comes decorated with a white luminous 60 minute scale and triangle-shaped marker at 12 o’clock, an essential tool for divers who need to measure elapsed dive times underwater. The piece also guarantees a water resistant rating of 300 metres.
What allows the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver Military Ceramic to stand out from its bronze and steel counterparts is its stealthy all-black matte ceramic case. Ceramic is renowned for being highly scratch resistant, hypoallergenic and lightweight on the wrist and is incorporated onto almost every element of the limited edition including the bezel, lugs and screw down crown with crown guard. Pairing perfectly with the black matte finish of the case is a military-inspired khaki green dial which follows suit to the rest of the BR 03-92 Diver collection presenting applique indexes and applique skeletonised hands filled with Superluminova.
Housed within the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver Military Ceramic watch is the BR-CAL.302, a Sellita based automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 38 hours, 25 jewels and a 28,800 bph beat rate. The Swiss made calibre provides central hands for hours, minutes and seconds and a small rounded date window between 4 and 5 o’clock beneath scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass. To complete the look of the 999-piece limited edition, you are spoiled with a choice of two straps options. The first is a divers classic, a black rubber strap and the second delivers a look perfectly suited to its military nickname with ultra-resilient khaki synthetic fabric. Both straps are fitted with a black PVD stainless steel pin buckle.
