BALL Engineer II Timetrekker Limited Edition Review

Jewellery & Watch News

A timepiece that compels you to push higher, the new BALL Engineer II Timetrekker Limited Edition collection has been purposely engineered with adventurers, mavericks and adrenaline seekers in mind. Combining an incredible set of functionality, including a high-strength 940L stainless steel case, a day-night indicator, patented quick set push buttons and the unstoppable glow of micro gas tubes, this trio of limited editions is ready to break boundaries with you.

Limited to only 1,000 pieces each, the BALL Engineer II Timetrekker is available in three designs. The first is a classic black dialled variant, the second comes with a handsome ocean blue dial and the third, a more unique option but possibly our favourite out of the three, a deep chocolate brown dial. During the day, all three designs offer a sophisticated, modest finish while during the night, the 49 micro gas tubes found on the hour, minute, second and dual time hands provide unbeatable night reading capability. We have no doubt that followers of BALL will already be familiar with the brand’s micro gas technology, but for those new to them, the self-powered micro gas tubes provide a luminosity 100 times brighter than markings using standard luminous paints. They do not need recharging from the sun, do not affect battery life or your power reserve and will last up to 25 years.

The BALL Engineer II Timetrekker Limited Edition is the first timepiece we’ve reviewed for a long time that has boasted a case engineered from 904L stainless steel. Brands like Rolex have used the material before but it’s fantastic to see smaller manufacturers like BALL Watch Company making it more accessible to budget-conscious audiences. While most luxury watch brands use 316L stainless steel, BALL has engineered the trio of Engineer II Timetrekker watches from 904L which exhibits superior resistance to corrosion, rust and acids. Thanks to the extra amount of chromium, molybdenum, nickel and copper in its construction, 904L stainless steel is capable of withstanding extreme conditions all while maintaining a stunning, lasting polish.

Despite their impeccable durability, the cases of the BALL Engineer II Timetrekker Limited Editions are remarkably slim. They measure to 40mm in diameter, 46.6mm from lug to lug and only 12.8mm thick, allowing the tool watch to slip perfectly under the cuff of a suit yet still provide a toughness worthy of exploring the highest mountains. For additional strength, the watches are equipped with anti-reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, a patented Amortiser system to surround the movement and absorb intense shocks, and a see-through sapphire crystal case back water resistant to 100 metres.

Powering all three BALL Engineer II Timetrekker watches is a COSC certified dual-time movement built in-house by the brand. The BALL RR1304-C automatic winding calibre provides central hands for hours, minutes, seconds, a magnified date window at 3 o’ clock and a secondary hour hand in blue in blue to indicate a second time zone. The dual time zone function is operated by simply pressing the quick-set buttons on the left hand side of the case. The button at 8 o’clock moves the hand backwards while the 10 o’clock button moves it forwards. The buttons are also cleverly engineered with an intelligent lock system, so the buttons are safeguarded against any accidental manipulation. To further assist globetrotters, the timepieces feature a day-night indicator at 6 o’clock for local time. White appears when it is day, dark blue for the night.

What amazes us most about the BALL Engineer II Timetrekker Limited Editions is the price. Retailing at only £2,850, you’ll struggle to find a range of durable timepieces like this made from 904L steel, micro gas tubes and housing a COSC certified dual-time movement anywhere else.  If you’d like to get your hands on your own BALL Engineer II Timetrekker watch, head over to the C W Sellors website here or get in touch with the team. The range is currently available to pre-order with an expected delivery date between March and April 2021.
