BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II Ceramic Watch Review

Jewellery & Watch News

When it comes to robust, legible, and high precision diving instruments, BALL Watch Company are always a guaranteed win. The American-Swiss watch brand has built its name on creating watches that are entirely dependable, offering the likes of COSC-certified movements, impressive magnetic resistance and most famously, their patented micro gas tube technology which delivers luminous legibility like no other substance.

Offering all this and more is the brand’s latest release, the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II Ceramic watch, a tough divers piece which for the first time delivers the DeepQuest model with a scratch resistant ceramic bezel. The original BALL Hydrocarbon DeepQuest watch was launched back in 2011 and we have seen several iterations since. All have been engineered from a single block of solid titanium and promised water resistant ratings up to 1,000 metres thanks to BALL’s patented automatic helium escape valve – more on that shortly. Last year’s DeepQuest was a popular one featuring a handsome titanium bezel but now, offering even more durability and a nice touch of colour is the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II Ceramic.

Since the bezel is one of the most significant changes to the new BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II watch, let’s start there. Engineered entirely from ceramic, the bezel is decorated in a gorgeous deep green shade which according to the brand changes colour depending on the light, going from a powdery green in the sun to a darker green in low light. As you’d expect from a diving watch, the bezel is unidirectional and comes decorated in a 60 minute scale illuminated by Superluminova.

Also available in green is the dial which similarly introduces a few subtle changes. Arguably more minimal, the dial has classic stick indexes as opposed to the large Arabic numbers found on previous DeepQuest watches alongside skeletonised hands for the hours and minutes. Decorating all of this hardware is BALL’s patented micro gas tube technology which uses H3 gas for unmissable legibility in the dark. The colour of the lume is green and yellow in this case and promises a brilliance up to 100 times more efficient than other luminescent materials. The BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II Ceramic watch is also available with a black dial.

As for the case, the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II Ceramic watch measures to 42mm in diameter and 15.5mm in height and is engineered entirely from a single block of titanium. The titanium allows the otherwise bulky case to sit incredibly lightweight on the wrist and secures with a choice of a matching tapered titanium and stainless steel bracelet or a black rubber strap. The latter is fitted with a standard pin buckle while the bracelet opts for a patented folding buckle and extension system so you can easily adjust it over a wet suit.

Further technical specifications include anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass, a shock resistance of 7,500Gs, an anti-magnetic rating of 4,800 A/m and a water resistance of 1,000 metres. The latter is helped by a screwed in crown and the brand’s patented helium release valve crown, a technology which allows gases to escape as the watch resurfaces from the crushing pressure of the depths. Within the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQuest II Ceramic watch is BALL’s RR1101-C Calibre which is a COSC chronometer-certified version of the ETA 2892. It beats at 28,800vph and promises a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.
