Jewellery & Watch News
The Louis Erard Excellence Guilloche Main Dial is limited to just 99 pieces worldwide and creates a three-dimensional illusion with its dial hand-crafted by Donzé Cadran.
A few years ago, you could have argued that Louis Erard was flying under the radar and you would have had a fair point. But that all changed when it began collaborating with some really interesting, high-end watchmakers. Earlier in the year, Louis Erard released its Excellence Email Grand Feu Small Seconds watch featuring a mesmerising dial designed and crafted by experts at Donzé Cadran’s enamel workshop. You can take a closer look at the watch in an article I covered here. Traditional decorative dial techniques have always appeared to be Louis Erard’s unique talent, yet as more and more Excellence watches unveil, it’s clear that the brand is certainly becoming an undeniable master of this art.
The new Louis Erard Excellence Guilloché Main Limited Edition watch conveys the time on a dial that has been hand-made and engine-turned. I’ll let you marvel at its beauty in the image below before we move on…
A dial made by Donzé Cadran
So… where were we? Ah yes, Louis Erard is nurturing its relationships with some revered brands right now. Earlier this month, it released its Le Triptyque Louis Erard x Alain Silberstein limited edition watch set and it sold out in a matter of hours. No Kidding. By doing so, the brand vowed to continue in its quest to create unique takes on simple timekeeping concepts, and the exact same can be said for the Louis Erard Excellence Guilloche Main Limited Edition watch we’re taking a look at today.
When we think of traditional guilloche dials we immediately go to “Clous de Paris” or “grains d’orge” patterns. But no. Louis Erard throws its audiences with a remarkably contemporary twist on a hand-made guilloche dial. This time the dial is executed in the “trompe-l’oeil” effect – a graphic three-dimensional pattern that you can instantly pick out from across the room. There is no mistaking this new Excellence limited edition watch from Louis Erard. A checked pattern is set across a black base layer. It literally jumps off the wrist.
Other features of the Louis Erard Excellence Guilloche Main Limited Edition watch
Of course, the Excellence Guilloche Main watch by Louis Erard has been produced in limited numbers. It’s what the company is so good at. Making us want timepieces like this all the more. And here goes the bad news (with a slight silver lining). There will only ever be a total of 99 people roaming this earth with the Louis Erard Excellence Guilloche Main strapped to their wrist. If you’re lucky enough to grab one from us here at Jura Watches (while stocks last), it will, however, make for a solid investment. The timepiece measures a 42mm diameter and has been crafted from stainless steel. Its case is developed from a three-part construction and executed in a polished surface to enhance an unavoidably luxurious finish against the skin.
The case of this Louis Erard limited edition watch is also topped with a domed anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front, enabling you to appreciate that three-dimensional chequered effect all the more. The Louis Erard lettering has been transferred onto the underside surface of the glass. The transparent sapphire crystal glass caseback lets you take advantage of an uninterrupted view of the movement. In this case, that engine is the Sellita SW261-1. This self-winding movement comprises 31 jewels and beats to the rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour. What’s more, a 38-hour power reserve will be gratefully received if you’re prone to want to change your watch over during the course of an evening or two. The movement features a special open-worked rotor but apart from that is manufactured very humbly, enabling Louis Erard to keep the cost of the watch down to an affordable and appealing level. A 22mm black calf nubuck strap finishes the Louis Erard Excellence Guilloche Main Limited Edition watch perfectly, contrasting with the striking blued steel central hour and minute hands on the dial.
That dial though…
Just a little more on that dial. Piece by piece, the hand-crafted guilloche dial comes to life before the craftsman’s eyes, but this is no quick process. The impressive design on the dial is a trick of the eye. You can almost get lost in it, which again, makes timekeeping the Louis Erard way that little bit more interesting. The dial is in fact, perfectly flat, but that’s not what your brain tells you. The effect is achieved by a black varnish base before the guilloche technique is carried out. A final rhodium coating is then applied to the dial to give the display that distinct silvery patina. This is enhanced further by brass exposed by the chisel, which creates these unique 3D squares that puzzle the mind. It’s a good job that the fir tree-inspired hands are left in their simplest of forms!
