Sapphire Meaning & History

The sapphire has been cherished for thousand of years with its name originating from the Greek word sappheiros. The most valuable colour of Sapphire is cornflower blue, otherwise known as Kashmir Sapphire or Cornflower Blue Sapphire. The rare orange-pink variation is known as Padparadschah while another exotic type is known as Colour Changing Sapphire. This type shows blue in artificial light and a stunning violent in artificial light.

Blue sapphire, most commonly associated with being the September birthstone, has symbolised truth, nobility, faith, wealth and harmony between lovers. For centuries, it has been worn by royalty and adorned the robes of the clergy. The Ancient Greeks associated the gemstone with Apollo and petitioners often wore the gem while consulting oracles. They believed that the sapphire tapped into the power of the “third eye” and makes oracular pronouncements clearer to hear.

In the contemporary world, the sapphire remains highly coveted. One of the world’s most famous examples is the Rockefeller Sapphire, rectangular step cut stone weighing 62.02 carats. Another famous sapphire is that found in the engagement ring of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. The stone is paired with stunning diamonds and was first worn by Prince Williams’ mother, Princess Diana.

Where is Sapphire found?

Three of the most historically important sources of sapphire are Kashmir, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. They were first found in Kashmir in 1881 when a landslide exposed a large cluster of “cornflower” blue crystals. The Maharaja of Kashmir took control of the source and from 1882 to 1887 recovered thousands of large crystals which became known as some of the world’s most coveted gems.
