Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli consists of several blue minerals together with varying amounts of calcite and pyrite, creating a glittering appearance, calcite can also cause a white mottling to the rock. Lapis lazuli is prized for its intense cobalt blue colour, from sulphur within the rock. A symbol of luck, health and wealth, the name comes from the Arabic ‘lazward’ meaning blue.

Said to be a favourite of Pharaohs, Emperors, Kings and Priests, lapis lazuli has been used in prehistoric times in jewellery. This striking material has also adorned spectacular churches and palaces have been decorated with wall panels and columns, as well as carvings and decorative objects. Lapis lazuli has been mined from the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan for 6,000 years. Deposits have also been found in Russia, Chile, Angola, Burma, Canada, Pakistan, and the USA.
