Amethyst Birthstone Meaning & History
The breathtaking tones of purple famed by the Amethyst birthstone have been prized for as long as humans discovered them. The ancients Greek loved Amethyst for its grape like colour which they associated with the wine god, Bacchus. They believed that wearing an amethyst gemstone could protect you from drunkenness and the word amethystos actually translates to ‘not drunk’ in ancient Greek. Other cultures believe the stone keeps those that wear it level-headed and sharp witted during battle or business affairs.
Leonardo da Vinci famously wrote that the February birthstone can be used to enhance intelligence and protect against evil thoughts while Buddhists continue to believe that amethyst enhances meditation with the gem still often used for Tibetan prayer beads. As well as being famously known as the February birthstone, Amethyst is also used by many to celebrate a sixth wedding anniversary. One legendary royal, Catherine the Great (Empress Catherine II of Russia), was known to have an obsession with the stone often decorating herself with amethyst necklaces, earrings and other stunning purple ornaments.
Where is Amethyst found?
Before the 19th century, Amethyst was as valuable and expensive as gemstones like emeralds, sapphires and rubies until a huge deposit of the gemstone was discovered in Brazil. Before that, most deposits were found in Russia. Today, Amethyst can been found in several places on the globe including Africa and South America with Brazil still remaining one of the world’s largest suppliers with hollow, crystal-lined geodes so large you can stand in them.
Other productive amethyst deposits are located in Canada, France, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Namibia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and the United States. Another prominent source for the February birthstone is the Anahí mine in Bolivia and in Africa in Zambia’s Kariba mine, which is famed for having amethyst with rich, deep purple hues.
