Citrine is a transparent variety of quartz. It occurs in attractive light golden to deep yellow, and orangish-brown colours. The name is derived from the gemstones’ lemon yellow colour. This colour is due to traces of iron within the crystal structure.
If amethyst is heated above 470 degrees, it turns into yellow quartz, citrine. There are some specimens called ‘Ametrine’ that are attractive purple and yellow colour zoned gemstones, acting as a hybrid between the two most popular varieties of quartz.
Citrine is one of the birthstones for November, and is gifted for thirteen-year wedding anniversaries. This stunning gemstone has been found in Brazil, Madagascar, the USA, Argentina, Burma, Namibia, Russia, Scotland and Spain.
