Carnelian is a translucent bright orange or red chalcedony that is coloured by iron oxide. Also referred to as Cornelian, it is likely to have been named after the cornel cherry due to its vivid red-orange hue. Carnelian is one of the world’s oldest recorded gemstones, with written records of its use up to four thousand years ago. Carnelian has been found in Brazil, India and Uraguay.
