About Muhle Glashutte Watches

Muhle Glashutte is a watchmaking company renowned for its selection of dive watches built to stand up to the challenges at sea, as well as its linear designs that pair well with something more professional and elegant. Its full name is Mühle-Glashutte GmbH nautische Instrumente und Feinmechanik (Muhle-Glashutte GmbH Nautical Instruments and Precision Engineering). Its long and eventful history began with its founder, Robert Muhle, who began a tool-making apprenticeship, setting up his own business in 1869. He was responsible for helping to develop a measuring device for a pocket watch. The company quickly established itself as a supplier of precision engineered gauges for the German School of Watchmaking as well as companies based in Glashutte itself. The watchmaker resides in the German town of Muhle and is one of the very few family run companies still going. Muhle Glashutte has a heritage that spans over 700 years. The manufacturer has been specialising in marine timekeeping instruments for 150 years now, with roots in the German Federal state of Saxony. By 1969 it was flourishing and by 1919 the company had expanded thanks to its second generation of owners, Max, Paul and Alfred Muhle.

Muhle Glashutte took great pride in developing instruments that would enable the wearer to carry out precise measurements, boasting a benchmark setting accuracy. It was these instruments that helped to save the German watchmaker from complete collapse during the Great Depression. Shortly after the Second World War, Muhle Glashutte continued to create precise measuring instruments, however, since the demand for these had significantly reduced, it marked a testing time in the manufacturer’s journey. Hans Muhle founded a new company in 1945 and Muhle Glashutte was expropriated for a second time. Taken over by VEB Feinmechanik Glashutte, it lost its independence, yet continued under the direction of Hans-Jurgen Muhle. He established the company under the name Muhle-Glashutte GmbH nautische Instrumente und Feinmechanik, marking a period that specialised in beautiful marine chronometers. Manufacturers all over the world sought these marine instruments, followed by the brand’s first two wristwatches, made available for purchase in 1996. These sports dive watches were used by sailors requiring a tool to measure tasks whilst out at sea. In 2001, the fifth generation of the Muhle family, Thilo Mühle, joined the company, eventually becoming the managing director with his father.

In 2003 Muhle Glashutte created the patented woodpecker neck regulation which featured a special shape that would cope under shock. Five years later, the company created the three quarter plate and an escape wheel bridge. These components were fitted to the centre of the brand’s chronograph watches. The German company’s first hand wound movement, the ME 9411 was fully designed by Nautische Instrumente Muhle-Glashutte in 2011. It featured in the Teutonia III Handaufzug watch.

Muhle Glashutte now offers a plethora of innovative timepieces from its catalogue. This includes the Terrasport – a family of dedicated pilot’s watches with high contrast dials and luminous indexes and hands. These models come in case sizes of 40, 42 and 44mm, offering a style and size for varied tastes. The Muhle Glashutte Teutonia watch collection offers a list of features that include day dates, outsize dates, chronographs and a world time displays with 24 hour time zones. In addition to this series, Muhle Glashutte also offers the Lunova watch collection with cases exuding a sporty chic aesthetic in stainless steel or titanium. Dark dials and matching straps provide a contrast against luminous hands and indexes, fitting in line with the brand’s extensive selection of robust models.
