About Baume et Mercier Watches

Baume et Mercier has keenly devoted its efforts and time towards building up a beautiful heritage of watches that revisit their past through contemporary versions. The story of the brand began when two brothers began selling watches in 1830 in the Swiss Jura. They built a reputation for themselves, incorporating the latest innovations and standing proudly by a motto that would later form the backbone to the brand’s ethos. To accept only perfection and always manufacture watches of the very highest quality.

Between the years 1851 and 1892, the brothers set up a head office in London which marked the beginning of their international expansion. Soon the company, operating under the name Baume Brothers, would become recognised in Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia and Burma. In 1869 one of the brothers, Louis Victor, gifted a gold pocket watch to his daughter which marked the beginning of the brand’s interest in creating elegant watches for women. Meanwhile, the company was creating chronographs and grand complications such as minute repeaters, tourbillons and calendars. The company also won ten Grand Prix awards as well as awards for accuracy in various timekeeping competitions.

Baume et Mercier Geneve was formed in 1918 and the brand won the highest distinction in watchmaking the following year with the Geneva Seal approval. The 1920s and 30s were characterised by the Marquise, one of Baume et Mercier’s most popular watches. Proving that meticulously crafted timekeeping instruments were not just for men, these timepieces featured luxurious faces nestled on a jewellery bracelet. In the 1940s Baume et Mercier focused on creating shaped watches and created various chic urban watches in line with the Art Deco period.

Between 1959 2960 Baume et Mercier began refining its traditionally round watch cases, experiencing huge success with chronographs, moon phases and triple date displays. Today, Baume et Mercier Capeland, Classima and Clifton watches pay homage to these emblematic Golden Fifties watches. In the 1970s the Swiss watchmaker created the Galaxie and Stardust models with unique case shapes, as well as the Riviera, one of the worlds first stainless steel sports watches. The watch was launched during the height of the steel sports watch craze and thus was instantly met with resounding success.

In 1998 the Richemont Group bought Baume et Mercier, extending its catalogue with watches like the Hampton and the Linea. These collections in particular have become Baume et Mercier flagship designs. Today, the Swiss watchmaker categorises its watches simply for collectors. Depending on what each individual is in search of, each of the brand’s main collections offers something different. The Baume et Mercier Hampton watch collection is intended for men and women, and notable for its shaped cases. Baume et Mercier Classima watches are characterised by their minimalist designs. For sophisticated complications, the Baume et Mercier Capeland would be the first choice. This line offers various chronographs and world timers amongst many others. For daring and dynamic women, the elegant Linea watch collection offers plenty of choice when it comes to dainty, feminine timepieces. Finally, Baume et Mercier Clifton watches are some of the brand’s most recent timepieces. With that in mind, these are contemporary models for urbanites, yet each one is crafted like all Baume et Mercier watches, in the traditional way.
