The classic link chain is beautifully reinterpreted in the Marco Bicego Lucia jewellery collection, tributing the bonds that bind us with heavy, organically shaped links elevated by the Italian Maison’s hand-engraving and white pavé diamonds.
In 1958, a small jewellery workshop was founded in Trissino in the Veneto region of northern Italy by a gentleman named Giuseppe Bicego. His son, Marco Bicego, followed in his father’s footsteps, harnessing the beauty of gold and turning it into elegant works of art. By the year 2000, Marco Bicego established his own company which is the Marco Bicego jewellery brand we know and love today. Versatile, contemporary and downright beautiful, his 18ct gold jewellery designs have become icons of the jewellery world, combining artisanal techniques like coiling and engraving with precious white diamonds and coloured gemstones.
With so many Marco Bicego jewellery collections to enjoy, it can be difficult to know where to start. But if you’re like us, and you enjoy the classism of a chunky link chain but one with added drama and sparkle, then look no further than the Marco Bicego Lucia jewellery collection. This breathtaking range of 18ct gold chain link necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings take inspiration from the classic gold chain but utilises heavier, organically shaped links for a mid-century modern feel with hand engraving and pavé embellishment.
Since it is its defining feature, let’s take a closer look at the Marco Bicego Lucia’s chain. The elegant strings of 18ct gold in the Marco Bicego Lucia necklaces and bracelets are formed by slightly domed links that blend together in unexpected twists and curves, as if the links are hugging each other in an eternal embrace. Meanwhile, the cuffs, rings and earrings deconstruct the chains to form statement, individual links that hang elegantly from the body as if still trailing from some invisible sequence. Marco Bicego describes the Marco Bicego Lucia jewellery collection as “a tribute to the true and unbreakable bonds that bind us” with each golden link representing a connection with a loved one.
Each link within the Marco Bicego Lucia jewellery collection is hand-engraved using an ancient Florentine technique known as Bulino. This rare artisanal practice involves using an ancient tool devised for hand carving called the “millerighe” burin which was originally employed during the Renaissance era. The tool creates a tactile finish on the 18ct gold surface, forming tiny grooves all in the same direction of a satisfying and silky finish. The effect also leaves a lasting impression on any reflection of light, creating its own minute displays of colour and shine.
While some of the Marco Bicego Lucia bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings are left pure in their original 18ct gold, some of the most opulent pieces feature breathtaking pavé diamond decoration. As the term pavé suggests, small diamonds are placed close together for a mesmerising and unmissable sparkle, placed upon the links themselves, on tips of the Marco Bicego Lucia bangles and the bails of the Marco Bicego Lucia earrings. The diamond weight varies depending on the item you’re looking at, but as always, Marco Bicego isn’t afraid to overindulge their designs with a dramatic number of gemstones.
