Oris’ latest collaboration sees their Change for the Better mission cross overseas and into the waters of New York Harbour in support of the Billion Oyster Project. The organisation, which aims to restore one billion oysters to the mouth of the Hudson River, is beautifully commemorated within the Oris Aquis New York Harbour watch, a limited edition of 2,000 pieces with a beautiful green mother of pearl dial.
The Billion Oyster Project
A luxury watch brand that has taken responsibility for reversing climate change more than any other is Oris. Their Change for the Better campaign aims to do just that putting a focus on the world’s precious waters. They have created endless limited edition and special edition watches over the years in collaboration with incredible charities that aim to clean our oceans and rivers or save endangered marine species. Their latest partnership is with the Billion Oyster Project, a non-profit organisation which hopes to one day restore New York Harbour, one of the world’s most polluted waterways.
Several centuries ago, New York Harbour was home to 220,000 acres of oyster reefs. Oysters are an integral part of our ecosystem, with a single adult oyster filtering as much as 50 gallons of water a day. They help other marine life to thrive while acting as natural storm barrier for those of us on land. Sadly, as New York grew in size and population, the harbour became a dumping ground for sewage and as such, the population of oysters had all but vanished. Thankfully, in 1972, the New York Clean Water Act was passed which prohibited the dumping of waste and sewage into the waters. Over the decades, the water has slowly improved but its still not enough. In 2014, the Billion Oyster Project was founded with an aim to introduce 75 million juvenile oysters to 18 restoration sites covered 14.5 acres of New York Harbour. By the year 2035, they hope to restore one billion oysters to the waterway.
The Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition
In support of this incredible mission, Swiss watch manufacturer Oris has launched a 2,000 piece limited edition watch based on their best-selling Aquis diver’s model. The design not only beautifully commemorates the marine animal, but the brand will be donating a percentage of each sale of the Oris Aquis New York Harbour watch to support the Billion Oyster Project.
The dial of the limited edition is its main novelty, offering an iridescent green mother of pearl centre inspired by the colour of the harbour water and the shimmer found inside an oyster shell. The rest of the display maintains all the tropes of the Oris Aquis with applied indexes, baton-shaped hands and a lollipop seconds hand all subjected to glow in the dark Superluminova treatment. We’re also warranted a date window at 6 o’clock which sits below a white inscription detailing its Swiss Made manufacture.
The case of the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition also upholds the values of Oris’ diving watch with a durable 41.5mm stainless steel architecture water resistant to 300 metres. On top, a unidirectional rotating bezel is engineered from steel and rather than opting for a ceramic insert like previous editions, selects a gorgeous metal inlay with a 60 minute scale done in relief. The bezel remains ratcheted for easy handling even while wearing thick gloves on and pairs alongside scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating.
Turning the Oris Aquis New York Harbour watch over reveals another tribute to the marine animal with a trio of oysters uniquely decorating the screw down case back. When the limited edition of 2,000 pieces is on your wrist, you can choose from two straps, both delivered in the box for the Oris Aquis New York Harbour watch. The first is a sporty seafoam green rubber strap with pairs in nicely with the dial closed by a pin buckle. The second is a classic three-row link stainless steel bracelet completed by a folding clasp. Powering the design is the Oris 733 automatic winding movement which offers a power reserve of 38 hours and a frequency of 28,800vph.
