Also known as the International Watch Company, this breathtaking watch manufacturer has become recognised around the globe for its timeless and sophisticated timepieces for men and women that combine only the finest materials, technologies and Swiss made movements.
The story of IWC Schaffhausen first began in 1868 when Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American engineer and watchmaker, travelled to Switzerland. With a plan to combine the outstanding craftsmanship of the Swiss with modern engineering technology he bought with him from overseas and the hydropower sourced from the nearby River Rhine, he began creating high quality pocket watches for the American market.
Five years later, in 1880, Jones sold IWC to Johannes Rauschenbach-Vogel, an industrial engine manufacturer in Schaffhausen. Unfortunately, just a year later, Rauschenbach-Vogel died and IWC was passed down to his son Johannes who proved to be a remarkable innovator. In 1885, IWC revealed the first watch with a digital hours and minutes display, famously known as the Pallweber system. Then in 1887, we saw the release of the Manufacture of Magique, a pocket watch in a cabriolet case with a 24 hour display, and in 1899 came the first IWC wristwatch.
In more recent years, IWC Schaffhausen has become one of the most widely known faces of the Richemont Group portfolio, leading the industry with their stunning collections of timepieces. One of their best-selling collections is the IWC Portugieser watch collection with a history just as remarkable as the designs it showcases. It’s origin dates back to the 1930s when two Portuguese gentlemen visited the IWC headquarters in Schaffausen and ordered wrist watches with the precision of a marine chronometer. Creating something with such perfect legibility and high precision was not an easy feat, and the only way of meeting the request was with their Caliber 74 hunter pocket watch movement. Today, the IWC Portugieser remains legendary and houses all the brand’s high-end in-house movements that are completed to an elevated level with stunning finishing, polishing and domed sapphire crystal glass.
The IWC Pilots watch collection is another breathtaking example of the brand’s ability to innovate and bring to life their comprehensive heritage. The first IWC pilot watch was created in 1936 for civil aviation purposes and was carefully engineered to be robust and resistant to changes in temperate and magnetism. The iconic IWC Big Pilot appeared a few decades later in 1994, becoming a 21st century iconic with its impressive 7-day power reserve and large date display at 6 o’clock. The large crown at 3 o’clock also became incredibly important for aviators who needed to control the functions even with thick flying gloves on.
