NEW Watches and Wonders 2024 Release – the Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579

Jewellery & Watch News

Panerai has revealed a new white grained and lacquered dial version of the Submersible Luna Rossa watch at this year’s Milan Design Week.

This year at the Watches and Wonders 2024 event in Switzerland, Panerai treated us to a strikingly stealthy Luna Rossa edition that celebrates the brand’s partnership with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team and its relationship with the America’s Cup, which began back in 2017. Since then, Panerai has become an Official Partner of the prestigious sailing competition, as well as the sponsor of the Softbank Team Japan and Oracle Team USA too. It was at the 36th America’s Cup in 2021, however, that Panerai culminated its nautical ties with the Italian sailing team. To mark tis year's sailing event, a white dial version of the Submersible Luna Rossa watch has been released.

This year the Italian watchmaker has been building on its partnership with the team in anticipation for the 37th America’s Cup this year and has released several nods to the sporting partnership. The special partnership with the sailing team represents the shared values of performance and precision between the two entities, marking the first of the brand’s Luna Rossa watches to be manufactured from the Ti-Ceramitech material, also revealed at the Swiss showcase last week. It is a titanium alloy that Panerai experts have subjected to a patented titanium “ceramization” process and has taken a total of seven years to achieve. The new Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Ti-Ceramitech Luna Rossa watch has a distinctive blue hue that occurs as a result of the process. This week, however, Panerai revealed a new Submersible Luna Rossa, coinciding with the Milan Design Week, where the watchmaker had its own pop-up at Milano Rho Fiera. This time, the watch is crafted from brushed stainless steel and boasts a clean white grained and lacquered dial. And if you loved the Panerai Submersible, you’ll be pleased to know it still carries all the collection’s much-loved features.

The Submersible DNA

The Panerai Submersible watch is designed to go underwater and stay underwater. It’s an important feature for the watch since many water-resistant watches aren’t made to withstand very long periods submerged. Unlike those, the Submersible is primed for diving, swimming, and water sports, among many other pursuits. Whether exposed to salt water or freshwater environments, it will hold up, thanks to its design, which is now a separate entity from the Luminor watch – another iconic Panerai design. The Submersible actually started in the Luminor category but, deserving of its own recognition now sits in its very own range. Many of the Submersible watch’s characteristics are shared with the popular Luminor range. These include the cushion-shaped case and crown-protecting bridge among some other features. However, it can be set apart from other models in the brand’s portfolio for several reasons. For a start, it features a unidirectional rotating bezel, designed for use underwater. The bezel can be aligned with the central minute hand on the dial to measure elapsed time once submerged in water The handy feature of the bezel is that it can only move in the counter-clockwise direction, ensuring that dive time can never accidentally become extended with a quick knock or bump to the bezel.

The New Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579

The new Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579 watch is a symbol of nautical excellence and innovation. It serves as an extension of the brand’s deep-rooted connection to the marine world and its relationship with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team. Max Sirena, the team’s Skipper and Director explains the significance of the collaboration;

“The synergy with Panerai takes us on a shared journey in pushing the limits of performance, where precision, innovation and a relentless pursuit of excellence are at the heart of our endeavours,”.

Sharing this view is the CEO of Panerai, Jean-Marc Pontroue;

“Our association with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team resonates deeply with Panerai’s maritime heritage and our pursuit of boundary-pushing performance. This partnership is a natural extension of our brand’s core values. The synergy with Panerai takes us on a shared journey in pushing the limits of performance, where precision, innovation and a relentless pursuit of excellence are at the heart of our endeavours”.

The new design of the Submersible Luna Rossa watch benefits from a robust stainless steel case whose exterior is fortified further by a 100-meter water-resistant rating. It also boasts a sophisticated brushed surface effect to dull down the design and contribute to a more masculine finish. The model is topped with a sapphire crystal glass front, which protects a white dial that has undergone a special process to achieve its vibrant, fresh character. The dial has been pressed several times to acquire a grained surface effect before being lacquered several times, providing the perfect backdrop to luminous-treated hour markers and hands, along with a vibrant red small seconds hand at 9 o’clock. This sub-counter is balanced by the date window at 3 o’clock and accompanies the Luna Rossa lettering above the 6 o’clock location. The entire dial is framed by a unidirectional rotating bezel made from stainless steel and filled with a glossy black ceramic material. Luminous markers on the cardinal points of the bezel, also enable time to be tracked intuitively.

The new Panerai Submersible Luma Rossa PAM01579 watch is powered by an in-house movement. The Calibre P.900 is one of the slimmest automatic movements in the brand’s portfolio, sitting at a thickness of just 4.2mm. It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 3 days. The movement also benefits from Incabloc technology and comprises one barrel to store the movement’s energy.

The new Panerai Submersible, as mentioned earlier, shares characteristics of the Luminor watch. These can be seen in the cushion-shaped case and the dominant crown-protecting bridge at 3 o’clock. The watch is also finished on a bi-material rubber and grey textile strap that features the Luna Rossa lettering running through a middle red stripe. To keep the strap secure against the wrist, it attaches with a brushed stainless steel pin buckle.
