Introducing the Bremont Waterman Apex Watch

Jewellery & Watch News

Back in 2018, Bremont launched their inaugural Waterman watch with brand ambassador and free-diver Mark Healy to raise funds for the Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii charity. Now on a parallel path to ocean preservation, the Henley-on-Thames watch manufacturer unveils their second Waterman edition, this one named the Bremont Waterman Apex. The limited edition of 250 pieces introduces a new brand ambassador, surfer Laird Hamilton, and supports non-profit organisation Bimini Shark Lab.

Bremont’s New Brand Ambassador

All Bremont brand ambassadors have one thing in common: they are the best at what they do. Laird Hamilton is no different, mastering the ocean as a professional surfer and ocean activist. Since he was a young child, he has been on a relentless pursuit for ever-bigger waves showcasing unnerving expertise in a multitude of disciplines. Laird is also renowned for creating a range of revolutionary crossover board sports including tow-in-surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and hydrofoil boarding. His passion for the ocean makes him the ultimate ‘waterman’ and as such, the perfect candidate for pushing the Bremont Waterman Apex watch to the limit. He also cares deeply for marine wellbeing and supports Bremont in their mission to help fund Bimini Shark Lab.

Laird Hamilton comments, “The ocean is a place of equality, the grand master, the teacher. The ocean for me is life, without it there is no life on earth. Ocean conservation starts with people caring enough to get them to participate. I want to share with people the beauty and the majesty of the ocean. My hope is that in sharing my experiences I can inspire others to have their own and in so doing get them to really care, it takes an army. In Hawaii the sharks are your aumakua which means that the spirits of your ancestors live in the sharks. They are amongst the most magnificent and magical creatures to have ever existed and we need to protect them. The education that Bimini Shark Lab can offer is invaluable, having a deeper understanding empowers us to care in the way that we need.”

Raising funds for Bimini Shark Lab

With the sale of each Bremont Waterman Apex watch, the British watch manufacturer will be donating a percentage to support Bimini Shark Lab and their work. Established in 1990 by Dr Samuel Gruber, Bimini Shark Lab, otherwise known as The Bimini Biological Field Station Foundation, is a non-profit organisation located on the island of South Bimini in the Bahamas. Their mission is to advance our knowledge on the biology of marine animals, specifically heavily impacted elasmobranch fish fauna like sharks and rays. They aim to use cutting edge field and laboratory research to improve the lives of these creatures while also educating future scientists and students to ensure the next generation continue this work.

Matt Smukall, President, CEO and Head of Research for Bimini Shark Lab adds, “We’re truly honoured that Bremont is supporting Bimini Shark Lab with the launch of this special timepiece. Bremont’s contribution will provide vital aid for our ongoing oceanic research to ultimately advance the field of marine science, conservation biology and ultimately go some way to help protect our oceans legacy.”

The Bremont Waterman Apex Limited Edition

Now onto the Bremont Waterman Apex watch itself. Based on the Bremont Supermarine, you can expect premium dive watch specifications including an automatic helium escape valve, screw in crown and crown protector ensuring a water resistant rating of 500 metres. The case also maintains its durable aesthetic with a 43mm diameter and 16.5mm height engineered from stainless steel using the brand’s legendary Trip-Tick case construction. The case also features a unidirectional rotating bezel adorned with a sleek black sapphire insert and a 24 hour scale dressed in accents of white and blue. A large triangle marker at 12 o’clock also adds a touch of pastel blue and features an insert of glow in the dark Superluminova. Meeting the edges of the bezel is domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment allowing for easy legibility of the dial below.

The dial of the Bremont Waterman Apex Limited Edition continues to ensure readability on both land and in water with Superluminova markings on the applied indexes and hands for the hours and minutes. The indexes are a combination of rounded markers and baton-shaped markers while the hands are needle-shaped for effortless indication. Two additional hands join the hours and minutes including one in red for the seconds complication and another in pastel blue for the GMT. These are also adorned with tips of Superluminova. The main novelty of the dial is its black centre which is handsomely engraved with a wave pattern and subtle shark fin motifs in tribute of Bimini Shark Lab.

Powering the hours, minutes, seconds, GMT and date functions is the chronometer certified BE-93-2AV automatic winding movement. It’s a calibre we’ve seen several times before in Bremont’s portfolio, taking its base from the ETA 2892 and offering 25 jewels, a power reserve of 42 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. You can admire the movement through the back of the Bremont Waterman Apex watch alongside its unique custom rotor finished in blue and adorned with the same wave and shark fin motif as seen on the dial. Completing the Bremont limited edition is a choice of two straps, the first a blue ‘Harbour’ rubber strap and the second a stainless steel bracelet.

Bremont Co-Founder Giles English concludes the Bremont Waterman Apex by adding: “We loved working with Mark Healey to launch the original Waterman and we’re thrilled to now follow up with the Waterman Apex and to be celebrating another great Waterman. Laird embodies all that it means to be a true Waterman and constantly strives for his apex in all that he does, we’re excited to see him testing the boundaries of our watches and his sport together. Laird represents so much of what Bremont stands for: adventure, drive, determination, and innovation. We stand with Laird in passionately believing in ocean conservation and as such we’re thrilled to be supporting Bimini Shark Lab in their endeavours. We have a reputation for making incredibly tough and functional dive watches which are all tested intensively by the military and explorers alike, the Bremont Waterman Apex is no exception.”
