Garmin EPIX Gen 2 Watch Review

Jewellery & Watch News

Those searching for a luxury smartwatch with both a bright display and impressive battery life need look no further with the new Garmin EPIX Gen 2 watch collection. The AMOLED display and 16 day battery life is then paired with much of the same functionality as the legendary Garmin Fenix 7. Let’s take a look at everything the Garmin EPIX has to offer…

The Design

It’s been almost four whole years since the release of the Garmin Fenix 6 and so understandably, smartwatch aficionados have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the brand’s latest luxury wearable. Alongside the projected release of the Garmin Fenix 7, the smartwatch manufacturer shocked the world with the revival of the Garmin EPIX, a series of 47mm titanium and steel models kitted with Garmin’s best technology and an AMOLED display. As it stands, the Garmin EPIX Gen 2 watch collection features four designs in total. The first three all feature titanium bezels while the last is finished in stainless steel.

The colourways include the Garmin EPIX Black Titanium with Black Band which includes bold red detailing on the crown, the Garmin EPIX Titanium with White Band and lime green accents, the Garmin EPIX Black Titanium with Chestnut Brown Strap and finally the Garmin EPIX Steel with orange detailing. As you’d expect, the titanium models sit much lighter on the wrist at 70 grams with the strap while the steel is a little heavier at 76 grams. The steel and titanium Garmin EPIX watches also differ for the glass with the former opting for Corning Gorilla glass and the latter equipped with significantly more scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

Understandably, one of the biggest draws of the Garmin EPIX 2 watch collection is the AMOLED display which in person is just as bright and crisp as you would hope. The display itself measures in at 1.3 inches and boasts a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. The displays are full colour and touchscreen pairing in nicely with Garmin’s familiar five-button architecture giving users the best of both worlds. The Garmin EPIX watches are also water resistant to 100 metres.

The Battery

Usually, one of the biggest drawbacks to an AMOLED device is a short battery life but with the Garmin EPIX Gen 2 watch collection, that isn’t an issue. Garmin have always prided themselves on creating premium active smartwatches with impressive power reserves, but the extent of the EPIX’s battery was something even we weren’t prepared for. Despite it’s AMOLED display, the Garmin EPIX promises up to 16 days in smartwatch mode as well as 21 days in Battery Saver watch mode, 42 hours in GPS only, 75 hours in Max Battery GPS and up to 14 days in Expedition GPS mode. This is really a fantastic feat from Garmin.

Additional Features

As one of their premium devices, the Garmin EPIX hosts a whole bunch of fitness, health, wellbeing, navigation and smart features for every kind of wearer. Ultimately, it’s all the same functionality found on the Fenix 7 which includes a wrist based heart rate monitor, Pulse Ox sensor, respiration tracking, sleep tracking, advanced sleep tracking, hydration tracking and the Body Battery Energy Monitor which uses all this data to gauge when you’re best to be active and when you may need to rest.

For lovers of fitness, there’s a huge range of preloaded activity profiles as well as animated workouts, the new HIIT workout profile, Garmin Coach, PacePro technology, VO2 max, performance metrics, daily workout suggestions, recovery time and several skiing and mountain bike features. Two of the brand’s newest apps include the Visual Race Predictor which uses your overall fitness level to provide an estimate on what you pace could be for the distance you want to run and the Real Time Stamina mode which works similarly to the Body Battery Energy Monitor but tracks and manages your exertion as you run to ultimately help you avoid overexertion.

Since the original Garmin EPIX was all about navigation, it’s no surprise that the new Garmin EPIX Gen 2 watches are filled with some of Garmin’s best navigational tools. There’s multi-GNSS support including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo and access to multiple navigation satellites for improved position accuracy in areas where GNSS signals are reflected, weak or typically don't penetrate. ABC sensors for altimeter, barometer and compass will also be crucial for outdoor explorers as will the multi-continent Topo-Active maps downloadable via Wi-Fi, round-trip routing and turn-by-turn navigation. As for smart features, the Garmin EPIX also boasts smart notifications, music apps and music storage and Garmin Pay.

The Verdict

It’s safe to say that the new Garmin EPIX watch collection is a success, not only it’s the crisp AMOLED display but for its impressive battery life and all the new sports and navigational tools on offer. The price of the Garmin EPIX is also reasonable starting at £899.
