Exploring Seiko Prospex Watches

Jewellery & Watch News

Designed especially for sport lovers, adventurers and adrenaline seekers, the Seiko Prospex watch collection provides highly durable, accurate and robust timepieces for those that only want the best. Seiko Prospex is just one of the many sub-brands of Seiko, a Japanese watch manufacturer behind the likes of Seiko Astron, Seiko Presage and of course the legendary Grand Seiko. The Seiko Prospex is one of the brand’s most successful and highly collectable for their exceptional functionality and striking visual appeal.

The 1960’s was a prominent time for the manufacturer with the launch of the first Grand Seiko watch with one of the world’s best mechanical movements for accuracy and precision, Japan’s first chronograph wristwatch in 1969 and most importantly, in 1965 they unveiled their first dive watch: the Seiko Prospex. This remarkable instrument boasted a water resistance of 150 metres, an automatic movement and a distinctive 38mm case with a bidirectional rotating bezel. This iconic design laid the foundations for the Seiko Prospex watch collection that we see today, especially for their legendary diving watches packed with incredible patented innovations.

As well as producing diving watches, we are treated to a selection of Seiko Prospex Aviation watches, Seiko Prospex Solar watches and a stunning new range of Seiko Prospex LX instruments which has changed the face of sport watches as we know it. Let’s take a look at these collections in more detail…

Seiko Prospex Diver Watches

The Seiko Prospex Diver watch collection is vast and offers a never-ending, unbeatable supply of high performing diving instruments with incredible water resistance cases and functionality perfectly designed for use in water. These diving watches are some of the most highly desired in the watch collecting world, particularly the Seiko Prospex Turtle, well-known for being one of the best valued automatic divers for under £400.

The Seiko Prospex Tuna is another dive watch with a fanatical following. Its nickname is a reference to the massive cylindrical shrouded-case design which often houses one of the brand’s in-house Japanese quartz movements considered by many as the most accurate in the world.  To truly grasp the quality and selection of the Seiko Prospex Diver watches, we highly recommend you check them out for yourself.

Seiko Prospex LX Watches

Considered the pinnacle of the Seiko sport watch, the Seiko Prospex LX line was only released earlier this year and we are already seeing an incredible selection of models to choose from including two new Seiko Prospex LX Limited Editions. The series takes its name from the Latin word “lux” which translates to “light”, an inspiration reflected in each watch’s ability to shine a presence upon its wearer through a high aesthetic sense, practicability and precision.

While their Zaratsu polished cases create an unmissable shine, the remarkable Seiko Spring Drive movements within each Seiko Prospex LX watch promise high levels of reliability and practicality no matter what sport you conquer, whether it be climbing, diving or hiking. Alongside the two limited editions, there are two key lines within the Seiko LX collection including a classic three-hand model with power reserve indicator and a Seiko LX GMT watch.

Seiko Prospex Solar Watches

The Seiko Prospex Solar watch collection is a sub-category of their other collections with many Seiko Prospex Divers and Seiko Street Series boasting solar powered movements. But due to the exceptional performance and popularity of these Japanese solar calibres, we had to talk about them separately. The V157 solar powered quartz movement recharges itself throughout the day when exposed to natural and artificial light meaning you don’t have to replace the battery every 2-3 years like a standard quartz.

There are a huge selection of Seiko Prospex Solar watches to choose from but one of our favourites from this year is the Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Solar Special Edition. This stunning chronograph epitomises everything that we love about the Prospex range. Its solidly built 43.5mm stainless steel case demands attention and comes equipped with a statement unidirectional rotating bezel decorated with a 60 minute scale and of course a V157 solar powered movement which promises a power reserve of 6 months once fully charged and an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month.

Seiko Prospex Pilots Watches

The Seiko Prospex Pilots watch collection, often referred to as the Seiko Sky series, encompasses all elements necessary to take control while in flight. Often with busy dials that are filled with fantastic chronograph, GMT and other useful complications, the Seiko Prospex Pilots watch is perfectly designed for professional aviators who need easy to use functionality.

Although these watches are usually overlooked due to the high popularity of the Seiko Prospex Divers, these exceptional pilots’ watches are certainly worth a look in if you are someone who appreciates sporty aesthetic and chronograph complication. Many of the Seiko Prospex Pilots watches are also equipped with a slide rule bezel that is designed to help pilots make various types of necessary calculation – while also looking incredibly cool on the wrist!

Seiko Prospex Street Series Watches

The breathtaking Seiko Prospex Street Series watch collection is inspired by an original 1975 Seiko divers with the same iconic outer protector in a more compact finish, perfectly designed for urban living. These instruments have a lightweight and scratch resistant titanium case and an aluminium three dimensional bezel, just like the original, but come executed in a more contemporary style for a striking look on the wrist.

The Seiko Prospex Street Series watches are still a fairly new addition to the industry, but they have already proven to be popular with sportsmen, divers and watch collectors alike.  They showcase unique leather pattern processed, waterproof and high-strength silicon accordion straps in a variety of colours alongside unmissable camouflage pattered dials that represent the playful style of the collection.
