Breitling launch their 2022 Red Arrows watch, this time utilising the multifunction personality of their coveted Aerospace model. The limited edition of 350 pieces is the perfect embodiment of the Swiss watch manufacturer’s aviation heritage, combining innovative technology with lightweight materials and retro aesthetics for everyday wearability.
Breitling and the Royal Air Force have a long history, one that dates back to the 1930’s when the luxury watch brand created a series of high-precision onboard chronographs for the cockpits of RAF aircrafts. For over 30 years, Breitling have also had a close partnership with the RAF’s premier aerobatic display team known as the Red Arrows. As well as the Red Arrows pilots wearing Breitling chronographs during their formation manoeuvrers, the brand have created several limited edition timepieces in honour of the collaboration. Last year it was the Red Arrows Chronomat watch with its distinctive Rouleaux bracelet and chronograph complication and before that, the Red Arrows Avenger with its classic time and date display. Now for the first time, Breitling employ their Aerospace model with the launch of the new Breitling Aerospace Red Arrows 2022 Limited Edition watch.
Gavin Murphy Managing Director Breitling UK describes: "We are proud that Breitling and the Red Arrows have one of the longest running relationships between a watch brand and a military display team. A relationship built on shared values, precision timing and excellence and a trust in our designs and functionality, as the pilots continue to wear our watches whilst testing the limits in their breath-taking displays. This Aerospace – elevated with Red Arrows insignia - is a long-requested edition that we have great pleasure in making available to the public for the first time."
For lightweight wear and scratch resistance, the Breitling Aerospace Red Arrows watch opts for titanium for the 43mm case, bezel and bracelet, the latter utilising three brushed links and a deployment buckle. The unidirectional bezel is perfectly adapted to the cockpit with ratcheted detailing for easy manipulation, even while wearing thick pilots gloves, and is adorned with a 60 minute scale for measuring elapsed time. A non-screw locked crown with two gaskets and integrated push piece is secured at the 3 o’clock position while a screw down satin-finished titanium case back ensures a water resistance of 100 metres. The back is also nicely engraved with the Eclat crest for the Red Arrows.
Beneath sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating is the iconic navy blue dial, the very same that has been spotted on the last few Breitling Red Arrows watches. The Breitling Aerospace Red Arrows Limited Edition also delivers the trademark “Diamond Nine” flight formation at 3 o’clock in red. Unique to the Aerospace model is two digital displays, both equipped with a backlight, and large stencil Arabic numerals. At the centre, two slender hands for the hours and minutes ensure readability in all lighting conditions thanks to Superluminova inserts.
Squadron Leader Tom Bould, Red 1 and Team Leader of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, adds: "Timing is critical to the world-class, dynamic displays and colourful flypasts synonymous with the Red Arrows. The team has to arrive at the right place, at the right time anywhere around the world, to the second – often with millions watching in-person or many more enjoying the performances via global media coverage. This precision and attention-to-detail are hallmarks shared by the Red Arrows and Breitling. But our mutual dedication and focus goes further than that. We’re pleased to have such a longstanding relationship with another organisation that understands how to combine this unrelenting requirement for precision with creativity, innovation and style."
Powering the Breitling Aerospace Red Arrows Limited Edition watch is the chronometer-certified SuperQuartz Breitling Calibre 79 movement. It promises a battery life of up to 4 years and a huge range of functions displayable on the digital screens. These include 1/100th second chronograph, countdown timer, calendar, second time zone, alarm, minute repeater, and EOL indicator.
With the sale of each 350 piece limited edition Breitling Red Arrows Aerospace watch, you’ll also receive a special commemorative coin officially authorised by the Ministry of Defence. The large, 2-inch diameter coin is made of a pure zinc alloy and is engraved with the emblematic “Diamond Nine” emblem and the Breitling heritage “B” on the reverse.
