BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker Limited Edition Watch Review

Jewellery & Watch News

The latest release from BALL Watch Company is a pair of stunning BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker Limited Edition watches. Equipped with COSC chronometer certified movements, tachymeter bezels and the brand’s legendary micro gas tube luminosity, the duo are inspired by René Dreyfus, one of the last great names of the Golden Era of motor racing and his perseverance and fearlessness on the track.

The story of René Dreyfus is one for the history books. As well as being a hero of France and motorsport, he became a hero of persecuted Jewish people. Despite his remarkable track record, he was blacklisted from competing with the best teams because of his heritage. Rather than giving up, Dreyfus risked it all and continued to race as an outlier throughout the 1930’s and 40’s where he turned racetracks into battlegrounds and proved that he could go faster and further than anyone. Inspired by his remarkable story, BALL Watch Company wanted to create a pair of limited editions that were just as aggressive in style, bold in attitude and built for speed and precision. Meet the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker watches.

Limited to 330 pieces, the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker watches are available with a blue or black dial and as expected come decorated in the brand’s iconic micro gas tubes. We have no doubt that followers of BALL will already be familiar with the technology, but for those new to them, the self-powered micro gas tubes provide a luminosity 100 times brighter than markings using standard luminous paints. They do not need recharging from the sun, do not affect battery life or your power reserve and will last up to 25 years. The BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker Limited Edition watches boast a total of 15 1mm high tritium gas tubes across the dial for optimal legibility with double gas tubes at 12 o’clock for instant orientation in total darkness.

When driving at blistering speeds like that of René Dreyfus, precision is essential. For that very reason, BALL Watch Company equipped both Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker watches with the BALL RR1401-C automatic winding calibre that has been certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) to be accurate to -4 to +6 seconds a day. The self-winding movement provides central hands for hours, minutes and chronograph seconds and a bi-compax layout for small seconds and 45 minutes counter. The power reserve of 38 hours, shock resistance to 7,500Gs, water resistance to 100 meters and anti-magnetic protection to 4,800 A/m also ensures the BALL chronographs are capable of withstanding everyday life with ease.

Continuing the motorsport inspired aesthetic, the BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Pathbreaker Limited Edition watches feature a tachymeter scale on the robust 42mm stainless steel bezel. The scale begins at the 9 second mark at 400 units of speed and can be used in combination with the chronograph function to measure the speed of an object over a given distance. The case is also fitted with the brand’s patented crown protection system, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and a stainless steel bracelet equipped with the brand’s famous patented folding buckle. The buckle is renowned for being able to withstand 1,400 Newtons of force and comes with a special extension system.
