Bishop Receives Gold Pectoral Cross

New Apostolic Pastoral Congress Bishop receives gold pectoral cross at Manchester Cathedral consecration service

The Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC), School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University, was commissioned to create a gold pectoral cross set with a hand cut garnet which was to be a faithful interpretation of how the pectoral cross from the Staffordshire Hoard would have looked prior to being damaged/buried. There are very few Christian items within the Hoard  and the original pectoral cross is displayed  in a specially designed new gallery at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

The gold cross was formally presented at a service in Manchester Cathedral on Saturday 24th October to consecrate a newly appointed Bishop into the Apostolic Pastoral Congress (APC). The replica’s purpose was twofold, it was to be worn by the Bishop during services and also used to promote awareness of the Staffordshire Hoard and, in line with APC's objectives, of early Christianity in the Midlands of England.

Permission to undertake this special commission was sought from the Hoard Management Group and the commission involved laser scanning and 3D CAD/CAM technologies by JIIC, casting and surface finishing processes by Hockley Mint, and hand stone cutting and setting by CW Sellors.

Notes to Editors

The Staffordshire Hoard is one of the world's largest collections of Anglo-Saxon gold and was originally discovered in a field near the village of Hammerwich Staffordshire, on 5 July 2009. It consists of more than 3,500 items, that are nearly all martial or warlike in character, with an estimated value of £3.2 million, and is jointly owned by The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The artefacts have tentatively been dated to the 7th or 8th centuries, placing the origin of the items in the time of the Kingdom of Mercia. Hoard items total over 5 kilos of gold, over a 1 kilo of silver and 3,500 cloisonné garnets. There is nothing comparable in terms of content and quantity in the UK or mainland Europe.
