Derbyshire Blue John Jewellery

Blue John gem stone for Blue John Jewellery. Derbyshire spar, Derbyshire Blue John or it’s most common name “Blue John” is a semi-precious stone found in the dark peaks of The Derbyshire National Park. Blue John is a from of fluorite and in it’s rarest form it is banded purple-blue or yellowish colour.

This superb stone is only found in the Blue John Cavern and the Treak Cliff Cavern near Castleton in Derbyshire. It was in the 19th century that Blue John was mined for it’s ornamental value.

The quality of the Blue John from the Derbyshire deposits is of a very high grade and making it perfect for making into jewellery for the fashion trade. It is commonly thought that the name Blue John was derived from the French ” Bleu – Jaune” translated to Blue – yellow. However there are other explanations that I think are more viable as there are no records of Blue John being shipped to France.
