Zircon

Zircon is a gemstone with outstanding fire and brilliance. It occurs in a variety of colours, to include blue, colourless, red, yellow, brown and green. Colourless zircon has been used as a diamond imitation because of its fire and brilliance, however zircon occurs in wonderful bright blues, golds and reds that make it a highly desirable gemstone in its own right.

The name zircon may derive from the Arabic ‘zarkun,’ meaning ‘vemillion,’ or the Persian word ‘zargun,’ meaning ‘gold coloured.’ Given the colour range of the gemstone, either is possible. In the Middle Ages, zircon was associated with inducing sleep, driving away evil spirits, and promoting riches. Zircon is gifted as one of the December birthstones, together with tanzanite and turquoise.

Zircon deposits have been found in Burma, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, Korea, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania and Vietnam. Australian zircon is the oldest mineral on Earth, approximately 4.4 billion years old.
