Unakite is a delightfully mottled opaque pink and green granitic gem material. This material is formed from a combination of pink feldspar, green epidote and colourless quartz, giving an eye-catching appearance. Unakite is a generally hard material, due to the hardness of its component minerals, and is nearly always cut as a cabochons or beads for setting into jewellery. Unakite was first discovered in North Carolina, in the Unakas Mountains. This deposit is where the unakite gets its name. Unakite has also been found in South Africa, Brazil, Sierra Leone and China.
