Tanzanite is the attractive blue to violet to purple variety of the mineral zoisite. It was discovered as a new gemstone in 1967, and the only commercially known source of tanzanite is the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Tanzanite is pleochroic, meaning that its purple and blue shades can vary when viewed from different directions, depending upon the crystal structure. The vivid colour and good clarity of tanzanite make it a highly popular gemstone. It is one of the December birthstones and is gifted for twenty-first wedding anniversaries.
