The spessartine garnet is a yellowish orange variety of garnet. It is occasionally marketed as ‘mandarin garnet.’ The vivid orange of this garnet variety comes from manganese within the crystal structure. The vivd colour, combined with the high lustre and hardness of the spessartine garnet make it perfect for eye catching and bright jewellery. The name spessartine originates from its occurrence in the ‘spessart,’ or forest of Bavaria, Germany where deposits were found in the 1880s. More recently, deposits have been found in Burma, Brazil, China, Kenya, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Namibia and the USA.
