Smoky Quartz is a smoky yellow to deep brown transparent variety of quartz. It is named after its smoky appearance and was highly popular in 1970s jewellery, as the mysterious brownish hues of the stone complement gold jewellery very well.
The colour in this variety of quartz is formed by natural and artificial exposure to gamma rays whilst forming. This gemstone is completely safe to wear and handle, and very large crystals have been found allowing for its incorporation into bold, statement jewellery. Smoky quartz has been found in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland and the Ukraine.
