Moss agate is otherwise known as dendritic agate. This wonderfully earthy agate is often said to resemble miniature trees, trapped within the creamy white to yellow layers of chalcedony surrounding them. The Victorians were very fond of moss agate, owing to their fascination with collecting and the natural world.
Contrary to first appearance, the ‘tree-like’ inclusions are not pieces of moss but traces of dendrite that are actually metal oxides.
