July Birthstones

If you celebrate your birthday in the month of July, then you are treated to the breathtaking Ruby birthstone. There are few stones that capture attention like the ruby with its deep red shades associated with love, passion and strength. The finest colour of ruby is a deep red with a hint of purple, often called ‘pigeon’s blood’ in the trade. Rubies look breathtaking against all metal types particularly yellow gold and platinum, so they make excellent adornments for jewellery and stunning gifts for those celebrating their July birthday.

Ruby Meaning & History

The name for the July birthstone derives from the Latin word ruber meaning ‘red’, a colour that has long been associated with romance, passion, strength and determination. Many cultures believed that the ruby holds immense power with its blood-like colour assuming a power over life. Others assumed that the gemstone grew on trees like fruit, first budding as small white gems before slowly ripening and turning red in the light of the sun. Once the stone was saturated in red colour, it was ready to be picked.

The Ruby is also considered one of the historically significant gemstones in the world. It is not only mentioned four times in the Bible associated with attributes like beauty and wisdom but in the ancient language of Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones” for its rarity and hardness which comes second only to diamond. The July birthstone is also believed to predict misfortune or danger while other cultures believe it can cure inflammatory diseases, reduce anger and even make them invincible in battle.

Where is Ruby found?

Myanmar is the world’s ruby capital with more than 90% of the world’s rubies coming from the Asian nation. The rubies from this region are highly sought after for their vibrant red colour and it is the place where the world’s largest ruby was found which weighed a total of 1,184 carats. Vietnam has also been another source for the July birthstone as well as Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Afghanistan, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar.
