How often you need your watch servicing will depend greatly on what type of watch you have, how often you wear it and how well it is stored when it is off your wrist.
If you have a quartz or battery-operated watch, then you will need to get the battery replaced every 2-3 years. It is also worth having the case cleaned out during the replacement to ensure any dirt or grime is removed. At C W Sellors, all our battery replacements include a free internal cleaning.
Some more expensive quartz watches may require their gear train lubricated every 8-10 years. If you are unsure if your quartz watch requires this, we recommend bringing your watch into your local C W Sellors jewellery for advice.
If you own a mechanical watch, then we recommend having your watch serviced every 3-5 years. However, this is also subject to a variety of factors. If you are careful when wearing your watch, wind it regularly and keep it stored in a safe place when it is off your wrist, then your watch may last up to five years before it needs servicing. On the other hand, if you are someone who wears their watch during risky activities like sports, wears it in the shower where it is exposed to water or doesn’t store it correctly exposing it to dust and dirt, then you will need to get your watch serviced much more regularly.
Here are some indications to look for if you think your watch requires a service:
- It has been over 5 years since the last service
- There is evidence of moisture
- The watch has taken significant damage
- Timekeeping is no longer accurate or appears erratic
- The watch sounds or feels different
- The crown no longer screws in
- The second hand sometimes skips several seconds
