Gemstones

Discover the world’s finest quality diamond and gemstone jewellery at C W Sellors where every natural gemstone is ethically sourced, cut and polished to perfection before being set into our elegant jewellery designs. We are involved in every step our gemstones take as it goes from the mine, to the workshops until finally being put to our exclusive jewellery settings.

All our natural and coloured gemstone jewellery is made in our workshops in the heart of the Peak District in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. We have precious and semi-precious gemstone jewellery which incorporate a variety of stunning, ethically sourced natural gemstones including diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, aquamarine, tanzanite and pearls. We only use ethically sourced gemstones and carefully assess and grade each one before they are individually cut, polished and hand set into our designs by our highly skilled and experienced master goldsmiths.

Many of our stunning jewellery collections also feature exquisite British gemstones like Whitby Jet, Blue John and Preseli Bluestone. Whitby Jet is considered one of the world’s rarest minerals and found fame during the Victorian era for its intense and unique black finish that Queen Victoria wore as a tribute to her late husband Prince Albert. The source of inspiration behind the term ‘Jet Black’, Whitby Jet can be found across the globe, but the finest gemstone is found in Whitby in North Yorkshire. Just a few miles south, the gorgeous purple, blue and yellow hues of the Blue John gemstone can be found in the Treak Cliff Cavern of Castleton in Derbyshire. The beauty of Blue John jewellery comes from its variety in colour and veins making each piece of the coloured gemstone completely unique.

Some of our other ethically sourced gemstones include:

Aquamarine – Considered the treasure of mermaids, the beautiful Aquamarine gemstone is the birthstone for March and comes in breath-taking shades of pastel and sky blue. Its name is derived from its colour with "Aqua" meaning water and "marine" meaning “of the sea” in Latin.

Diamond – One of the world’s most popular and precious gemstones, Diamond is the birthstone of April and is the hardest known natural material on both the Vickers scale and the Mohs scale. There are a huge variety of diamond cuts available each boasting their own unique sparkle.

Emerald – A bright green coloured gemstone, Emerald is the birthstone of May and is known to some as the ‘stone of successful love’. It is also believed that Cleopatra loved the deep green hues of Emerald and wore many of them in her clothing and jewellery.

Pearl – An organic gemstone, Pearls are produced by oysters, clams, or muscles and are one of the only gemstones produced by a living organism. They give off an unmissable iridescence of whites, pinks and blues that are widely associated with purity and generosity.

Ruby – Symbolic of passion and love, Rubies have long been considered the perfect Valentines or wedding gem. Their deep red shade is enchanting and has been revered since ancient times. The Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, or in other words, the red variety of a sapphire.

Sapphire – Typically royal blue, but also found in pink, purple, green and orange, Sapphires are identical to Rubies in all properties except for colour. The blue variety of Sapphire is the birthstone of September and has been associated with royalty for centuries, increasing in popularity when it was used in Princess Diana’s engagement ring in 1981.

Tanzanite – The blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite, Tanzanite is named after its only origin in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Unlike most other coloured gemstones, Tanzanite was discovered only recently in the 1960’s and due to its incredible popularity and limited source, it is extremely rare and highly valued.

Tourmaline – With a name derived from the Sinhalese word “tourmali” meaning “mixed parcel, Tourmaline is a semi-precious gemstone made up of a variety of elements. It comes with one of the widest colour ranges of any gemstone including red, green, blue, pink, purple and yellow.
