Dumortierite

Dumortierite was first described in 1881, and was named after the noted French palaeontologist, Vincent Dumortier. Dumortierite occurs in pale to dark blue, although pink and purple colours have also been mined. The stone has a Mohs hardness of 7, making it ideal for setting into jewellery. Deposits are found in Brazil, France, India, Canada, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Sri Lanka and the USA.
