Cabochon

A cabochon is a gemstone cut that consists of a domed, polished top surface with a flat back. A cabochon is a very versatile cut, and looks stunning in most coloured gemstone jewellery, such as rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and brooches.

A cabochon is the perfect cut for a softer gemstone, as there are no harsh facet edges or points to abrade or damage through wear. This is why opal, amber, moonstone, garnet and emeralds are often seen in cabochon form.

The cabochon cut also flatters dark, opaque to translucent stones. Sometimes cabochons are hollow cut to lighten the gem material and create a more desirable colour from a dark rough crystal.

Aside from this, the cabochon is the cut of choice for showing off optical effects in gemstones such as stars, cat’s eyes, and surface colours or banding. This is apparent in star sapphire, cat’s eye chrysoberyl, banded agate, and many more examples.

A gemstone cabochon is a classic, uncomplicated cut, which suits most coloured gemstones and looks exquisite in all types of jewellery.
