Blue John Cavern

The Blue John Cavern is in fact a series of caverns in the heart of the Peak District, Derbyshire, in which the rare mineral Blue John is mined. Blue John is a highly prized variety of fluorite and occurs with a distinctive yellow and blue banding. Blue John has been used for thousands of years both in decorative objects and striking pieces of jewellery. C.W. Sellors is proud to shape, polish and set Derbyshire Blue John into beautiful and eye catching items of jewellery, to include rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, necklaces, cufflinks and many more.

The Blue John Cavern is located in Castleton, and is thought to be 250 million years old. This series of caverns were first discovered by the Romans almost two thousand years ago. Blue John vases were recovered from the ruins of Pompeii, showing that this gemstone was valued for ornamental purposes, prior to 79AD.

The Blue John mineral is found in veins of deposits that are encapsulated by limestone, or loose in clay beds. The Blue John Cavern contains eight of the fourteen recorded veins of this captivating mineral. These veins are named the Twelve Vein, Old Dining Room, Bull Beef, New Dining Room, Five Vein, Organ Room, New Cavern, and the Landscape vein. The different veins are distinguished through their different mining locations but also through their bandings. For example the Twelve Vein features multiple layers of purple banding against a largely purple background. On the other hand, the Miller’s Vein is a largely white to yellow base colour with thin bluish purple lines running through it.
