Bloodstone

Bloodstone is an opaque dark green variety of chalcedony with distinctive red spots. These red spots are caused by iron oxide, and give this striking gemstone its name. Bloodstone was formerly called ‘heliotrope,’ which is derived from the Greek for ‘sun turner.’

Bloodstone is commonly used in gentlemen’s jewellery, to include signet rings, seals and intaglios as well as in ornamental objects. It is gifted as an alternative birthstone for March, and is said to give the wearer great courage, fortitude and presence of mind, according to ancient folklore.

Bloodstone has been found in India, Australia, Brazil, China and the USA.
