Diamond Birthstone Meaning & History

The name for the April birthstone comes from the Greek word adamas which translates to ‘invincible’ or ‘unbreakable’ reflecting the stone’s remarkable durability. The diamond is in fact the hardest mineral known to man with a rating of 10 on the Mohs scale of relative hardness. This is one of many reasons both the contemporary and ancient worlds have adored this gemstone for so long. Other reasons include its ability to be shaped into many different cuts and its remarkably versatile sparkle dependant on its unique cut and clarity.

Diamonds have been adored as early as the fourth century BCE when diamonds were gathered from India’s rivers and streams. The transparent gemstone was largely coveted by the wealthy and royalty with the very first diamond engagement ring given by Archduke Maximillian of Austria to his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy in 1477. Since then, the tradition of giving a diamond ring for an engagement has remained something of a permanent tradition!

Where is Diamond found?

At the beginning, diamonds were predominantly sourced from India until the early 1700’s when their supplies began to decline. After that Brazil emerged as an important source when they were discovered by gold miners on the banks of the Jequitinhonha River in Minas Gerais. Diamonds were also been found in Kimberley, South Africa in the late 1860’s and this marked the beginning of the modern diamond market as well as the discovery of the largest diamond ever found at 3,106 ct (621 grams). Diamonds can also be sourced from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, Russia and Botswana.
