About Seiko 5 Sport Watches

Despite having been created by the world’s largest Japanese watch manufacturer, the Seiko 5 Sport watch has a history of its own. The collection is known for its broad selection of affordable, stylish and robust sports watches, each one powered by a mechanical movement. The case of a Seiko 5 Sport watch is water resistant, enabling these luxury watches to be enjoyed on dry land, in the water or to the office. Some of the Japanese manufacturer’s highlights from the collection include the pilot and dive watches, as well as those with hard anti glare glass and 100 meter water resistance.

The Seiko 5 Sport watch collection was born in the 1960s. Having been developing these robust tools for over half a century, the company decided to redesign the watch in 2019, drawing the crowds even more with reworked styles, innovative features and improved materials. The concept for the very first Seiko 5 Sport watch was born in 1963. It marked a milestone for the company since it was Japan's first ever automatic watch with a day date feature. It also offered some key attributes. It needed to feature a recessed crown, offer 100-meter water resistance, be powered by a mechanical automatic movement and promise a durable case and bracelet. The Seiko 5 Sport watch drew its strength from additional qualities too, like its shock resistance system and the then new mainspring.

Having taken a few years to develop, the very first Seiko 5 Sport watch was born in 1968. It appealed to men and women who played sports, frequently took to the water or required a robust tool for extreme outdoor conditions. With its luminous coated plots, it became the go anywhere do anything kind of watch for experienced and new Seiko watch collectors. When Seiko revisited the design of the Seiko 5 Sport, it decided to keep the celebrated case design, the arrowhead minute and hour hands and the distinctive hour markers on a one way rotating bezel. Suffice to say, measuring elapsed timings was still as easy and as effective as ever. A new movement entered the picture, however. Seiko utilised the Calibre 4R36, equipped with a 41 hour power reserve to drive these newer models, complete with a central hacking seconds hand.

There are now different sub-categories of the Seiko 5 Sport collection, appealing to different collectors, personalities and their respective requirements. These comprise; Specialist, Sports, Suits, Street and Sense models. Each iteration is complete with three dimensional hour markers and the collection offers plenty of variety in terms of dial colours and strap or bracelet options.

There are also vintage inspired models from the Seiko 5 Sport watch collection that have returned in popularity over the years. Some newer models exude this desirable vintage look, like the diver watch designs finished on stainless steel mesh bracelets. Other dive watch models from the collection include those crafted from stainless steel with rose gold or yellow gold PVD coated elements. For a model that imparts a more dynamic and modern look on the wrist, there are Seiko 5 Sport watches finished in a black PVD finish and a blacked out dial design.

Seiko continues to extend upon its Seiko 5 Sport watch collection with innovative, all purpose, robust watches for every situation. Powered by reliable mechanical movements and executed in colour schemes that vary from the classic to the playful, modern day Seiko 5 Sport watches mark a new generation of Seiko manufacture, strengthened of course, by the brand’s rich heritage in precision timekeeping.
