A Brief History of FOPE Jewellery
The story of FOPE jewellery began in 1929 when a gentlemen named Umberto Cazzola opened his first goldsmith’s workshop in Vicenza, Italy. Known as the “City of Gold” with a reputation for creating the world’s finest jewellery collections, FOPE was up against much competition and yet despite this, they quickly gained standing for their solid gold watch straps supplying some of the biggest watchmaking brands in Switzerland with their designs. Eventually, Umberto Cazzola passed the company onto his son Odino who invested in several new technologies which allowed the creation of the first flexible metal strap by FOPE.
In 1970, Odino’s two children Umberto (named after his grandfather) and Ines joined the business. They were essential in the progression of the business as they began investing greatly into the research and development of new jewellery making technologies. During this time, FOPE continued to specialise in making watch straps and watch cases from gold while also experimenting with new techniques to create their own collections of exquisite jewellery. One of their first jewellery creations was the Novecento mesh chain in 1985 which boasted remarkable flexibility. It was a huge success in Italy and all round the world and remains the main inspiration for much of the modern FOPE jewellery collections you see today.
2007 was a huge year for FOPE with the launch of the FOPE Flex’It jewellery collection. Taking inspiration from the Novecento mesh chain, the family delivered a series of beautifully handcrafted yellow, white and rose gold pieces characterised by a patented ‘roll on’ mesh chain. Each chain, whether it be a FOPE Flex’it necklace, ring, or bracelet is rendered fully flexible thanks to the tiny gold springs hidden between each link. Exactly ten years later, and FOPE hit another significant milestone with the release of their first line of luxury watches. The Fope LadyFope collection features the familiar Flex’it bracelet in 18 carat rose or white gold alongside Swiss made quartz movements.
